Area Attractions:
There are a number of attractions in the Monterey Bay area that you may wish to explore on your own. It is truly one of California's finest locations. The Monterey Bay Marine Sanctuary, which includes kelp beds, sea otters, sea lions and a variety of waterfowl is spectacular. Bicycles and kayaks can be rented in Monterey. There is an extensive beachfront bike/walking trail connecting Cannery Row to Asilomar beaches. Surfing and scuba diving are popular sports in this area as well.
For a complete listing of attractions, visit http://www.monterey.com/index.html

Field Trip
A field trip on the Monterey Peninsula and the Big Sur coast will include rare species (Monterey pine, Monterey cypress, Santa Lucia fir, coast redwood, Coulter pine) with unique population structures. A basic theme of the field trip will focus on the fragmentation of the Arcto-Tertiary flora, which is now restricted to coastal California. The tour may include stops at cultural sites, such as early California missions, Cannery Row or the John Steinbeck Center.
(View details.)
(The field trip is included in the conference schedule and there is no extra cost for conference attendees. However, there will be a small fee for companions. Lunch is provided for all guests of Asilomar Conference Grounds.)
