Genomic research on adaptive traits (cold hardiness, phenology) in coastal Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii [Mirb] Franco var menziesii) has been my main focus for most of my career with PSW at the IFG. This includes construction of a sex-averaged genetic linkage map from a three-generation pedigree and subsequent trait analyses on large mapping populations (Pseudotsuga menziesii [Mirb] Franco var menziesii) from this cross. I continue participation in the Douglas-fir Genome Project (DFGP - http://dendrome.ucdavis.edu/dfgp/) which consists of collaborators from Pacific Northwest Research Station, Universities and private industry. Recently, I have begun molecular research on the WPBR pathosystem in sugar pine (Pinus lambertiana Douglas) with the objective of determining the genetic factors controlling both quantitative and qualitative resistance. Such information will contribute greatly to land management efforts to maintain healthy forests and keep the exotic pathogen responsible for WPBR (Cronartium ribicola) from becoming pandemic in North America. |
